Random Chord Generator - Guitar

Hit Generate and let chaos hand you the next riff. RCG throws fresh chords your way, helping you break habits, explore new voicings, and find inspiration fast. It’s the quickest way to get unstuck and the easiest way to stumble into something cool.Built for guitar players. Designed for discovery.

Works in any browser. No install needed.

Currently trying to get my hands on a Mac. iOS version coming soon.

How it Works

◈ Difficulty – pick the chord pool (Triads, 7ths, etc).
◈ Length – choose how many chords to generate.
◈ Generate – tap to create a new chord progression. The 1st row shows chords with the root on the A string; the 2nd row shows the same chords – root on the Low E. “Nth fr” = fret number of the root note.
◈ Left-Handed Mode – use the toggle in “Chord Charts” to flip them horizontally. The app remembers your preference & also exports left-handed PNGs.
◈ Lock – keep a chord fixed while you re-roll the others.
◈ Drag & Rearrange – drag the handles to the left of the chord names to reorder them and shape the perfect progression.
◈ Add to Favorites – tap the ⭐ under any chord chart to save it.
◈ Type Chords – enter your own chords manually (e.g. C Bm6 F#m7(b5b9) Bm7b5), then tap “Show My Chords.” Think of it like Google – but for chords.
◈ Save as PNG – export your progression; find it in your Downloads folder.
◈ Tip – for the best experience, use Landscape Mode – everything fits more comfortably.

Have random fun – I hope it inspires you to experiment and discover new sounds!

Inside the App

The Sound of Randomness

...or what happens when you stop chasing perfection and start chasing surprise.
Here are a few chord progressions made with RCG, that I then recorded:

0:00 / 0:00
E5 A#5 A5 Gm D#m Cm - Level 1 Chords
GmMaj7 Cm Edim - Level 2 Chords
Fmaj7 Dsus4 A#m7 Csus4(add9)
C#m6 F#m6 Cdim7 - Level 3 Chords

RCG in Action

Quick tutorial - a peek into the moment where code, curiosity, and six strings collide

Why I Made This

Because I wanted to be surprised again.

In a world of increasing AI assistance - or steering - where we get so much help in so many domains including the arts (sometimes maybe even more than we need), I think this app is a breath of fresh air as it provides a different approach to music.

Still “man and machine”, yes, but the “machine’s” part is minimal: RCG gives you the first sparks, the nudge in a direction. But you build from there, you take the music into the stratosphere.

It doesn’t compose for you. It just gives you a small push into the unknown.

I was pleasantly surprised to discover that from randomness, something beautiful can arise - no theory, no plan, just sound taking shape.

One of my favorite progressions I made with the help of RCG: G#mMaj7 C#m Edim Gdim A#dim Cdim G#mMaj7 (16th fret). It reminded me that creativity doesn’t need a roadmap, only a direction. A simple, cool-sounding one was going from Fm to C#m.

I genuinely think it’ll add value to your life - reignite that beautiful curiosity that makes you play and remind you why you picked up the guitar in the first place.

Cheers, I’m Shumu - guitarist, teacher, and the human behind RCG. And huge Cyberpunk 2077 fan.
I built this app to reignite the same spark that first made me pick up the guitar - the thrill of discovery that truly never fades away.
